How to promote a Minecraft server

Server lists bring players who are already looking. Short videos reach the ones who aren’t. This guide covers both, in the order that works for a new or growing server, and shows how to tell which channel actually brings joins.

Before you promote: make the first five minutes good

Every guide that ranks for this question agrees on one thing: promotion amplifies whatever a new player finds when they join. If spawn is confusing, the tutorial is broken or the server lags, more traffic just means more people leaving. Fix the first five minutes before you spend time or money on reach.

  • A short, readable address. Players type it by hand from a video or a list. play.yourserver.com beats an IP and a port.
  • A clear first step at spawn. One NPC, sign or hologram that says what to do next.
  • Something worth filming. A signature feature you can show in two seconds: a mine that refills, a generator tower, an island that grows, a heart counter.
  • A Discord with the address pinned, so curious viewers have somewhere to land.

The channels that bring players, and what each is good for

Server lists and voting are the base layer: they’re free, they compound, and players who arrive from them already want a server like yours. Short videos are the growth layer. They reach people scrolling Minecraft content who didn’t know your server existed, and a single Short can keep bringing joins for weeks.

Server lists and voting

  1. List on several sites, not one

Create listings on the main lists for your game mode. Use the same name, address, banner and short description everywhere so players recognise you.

  2. Pick a few honest tags

Choose the 4–6 tags that describe your server best (for example Prison, Economy, Custom Enchants). Tagging everything makes you look like nothing in particular.

  3. Turn on voting rewards

Install NuVotifier so votes on list sites reach your server, and give a small daily reward for voting. Votes push your rank up; the reward keeps players voting.

  4. Add a video to the listing

Many lists let you embed a YouTube video or trailer. A 30-second tour converts better than a wall of text.

Never buy fake players or votes. Lists remove servers for it, and players can tell when the numbers don’t match the world.

Short videos: where new players come from now

Vertical Shorts on TikTok, YouTube Shorts and Instagram Reels are the format that keeps coming up in recent server-growth guides, because the platforms show Minecraft clips to people who watch Minecraft content, whether or not they follow you. MineGuard’s 2026 guide, for example, recommends one or two clips a day with the server address and Discord in every caption (source).

What works for servers is consistent across the videos we’ve measured and the guides above:

  • A hook in the first one to two seconds. A character on screen from frame 0 and a bold line: “Do not mine with a pickaxe on this server.” See hooks that work.
  • One shot per phrase. Narrated promos we analysed cut about every 1.3–1.5 seconds, always on a word.
  • Word-by-word captions, because most people watch with the sound off. See captions for Minecraft Shorts.
  • The address on screen at the end, either as an IP badge or a how-to-join walkthrough.
  • Volume. One great video helps; three a week for months is what moves a player count. See how often to post.

Platform specifics live on their own pages: Minecraft server TikTok and Minecraft server YouTube Shorts. For ideas specific to your game mode, see video ideas by game mode.

Creators, sponsorships and paid promotion

Paying a creator to play on your server puts you in front of an audience that already trusts them. Forum advice for server owners tends to favour mid-sized, Minecraft-focused channels over the biggest names, because their viewers are more likely to actually join. Ask for the address on screen and in the description, and give each creator their own join address so you can see what they brought in.

There is also a market of editors who sell Shorts to servers per video. That works, but the cost adds up at the volume short-form needs, which is the gap VoxelCut was built for: it films your server and edits the Shorts on your own PC.

Measure joins, not views

Views are easy to read and easy to misread. What matters is how many people typed your address because of a video. The Minecraft client sends the hostname a player typed when they connect, so you can give each channel its own address that points to the same server:

  • tiktok.yourserver.com in TikTok captions and on TikTok videos
  • yt.yourserver.com on YouTube Shorts
  • play.yourserver.com on server lists

Join-analytics plugins can then count new players per hostname. In VoxelCut, the Brand Kit keeps per-platform addresses, so each export can end on the right one. Some servers add a matching command such as /kit tiktok as a thank-you for joining from a video.

Where VoxelCut fits

Making three to five Shorts a week by hand means recording gameplay, writing a script, recording a voiceover, cutting, captioning and exporting every time. VoxelCut is a Windows app that does that work from a prompt: it writes and voices the script, joins your server in a real Minecraft Java client to film each shot, edits it with captions, Minecraft-style text, zooms, sound and music, and ends on your address. You can change anything by hand on a normal timeline.

Frequently asked questions

What is the best way to promote a Minecraft server for free?

List the server on several server-list sites with voting rewards, keep an active Discord, and post short vertical videos of your server on TikTok, YouTube Shorts and Reels several times a week with the address on screen and in the caption.

Do server lists still work?

Yes, for players who are already looking for a server. They are free on most sites and rank by votes, so add NuVotifier and reward daily votes. They work best alongside short videos, which reach players who aren’t searching yet.

How many videos should I post to grow a server?

Plan for several a week rather than one big video. Recent server-growth guides suggest one or two clips a day on TikTok; three to five a week is a realistic start for a small team. See the posting schedule guide for a full plan.

How do I know which promotion brought players?

Give each channel its own join address (for example tiktok.yourserver.com) pointing to the same server, then count new players per hostname with a join-analytics plugin.

Should I pay for ads or creators?

Only after the server keeps the players it already gets. Then a mid-sized Minecraft creator is usually better value than a huge channel, and a separate join address shows what each one brought.
