How to make a “how to join” video for your server

Many viewers who want to join have never added a server before. A how-to-join video, or a few seconds of it at the end of a Short, shows exactly where to type your address.

Standalone video or ending?

  • As an ending (about 4 seconds): after a promo, sped up, with the typed address zoomed. This is how the prison promo we measured ends.
  • As its own Short (about 15 seconds): “How to join in 15 seconds”, worth re-posting every few weeks and pinning on your profile.
  • On your listing and Discord: the standalone version answers the most common question new players ask.

The Java Edition steps to show

  1. Title screen

Start on the Minecraft title screen and click Multiplayer.

  2. Add Server

Click Add Server. Leave the name field for later or type your server name.

  3. Type the address

Type the address into Server Address, character by character, with the field zoomed to at least about 1.8× so it’s readable on a phone.

  4. Done, then Join

Click Done, find your server in the list, and click Join Server.

  5. Arrive at spawn

End on the spawn arrival, with the address still on screen.

If you support several versions, say which in a caption or on screen. Players on the wrong version see an “Outdated client” or “Outdated server” message and give up.

Make the address readable

  • Zoom on the address field while it’s typed. Game text at normal size is too small on a phone.
  • Add typing ticks under the typed characters and a click sound on each button.
  • Keep the address inside the safe zone: away from the bottom quarter and the right edge, where the app buttons sit.
  • Show the address as text for the last few seconds too, so viewers can pause on it.

Bedrock players

If your server accepts Bedrock players, show the Bedrock address and port as a second line rather than a second walkthrough, which would double the length. An IP badge with the port underneath is the common pattern.

How VoxelCut films it

VoxelCut records the real vanilla screens: it opens Multiplayer, clicks Add Server, types your Brand Kit address live, clicks Done and joins, with the cursor gliding between buttons. The edit adds the zoom on the address, typing and click sounds, and the spawn arrival. It works as a standalone Short or as the ending of any video.

Frequently asked questions

How long should a how-to-join video be?

About 15 seconds as a standalone Short, or about 4 seconds sped up as the ending of another video.

What are the steps to join a Minecraft Java server?

Title screen, Multiplayer, Add Server, type the address in Server Address, Done, then select the server and click Join Server.

Yes. It drives the vanilla Multiplayer and Add Server screens in your Minecraft client and types the address from your Brand Kit live while recording.
