Guide · Server growth

How to get more players on your Minecraft server

Getting more players is a funnel: someone sees your server, remembers the address, joins, and stays. Most servers lose people at a step they never look at. Here is each step, what breaks it, and how to fix it.

The player funnel

StepWhat has to happenWhere it usually breaks
SeeSomeone sees your server in a list, a Short or a creator’s videoNot enough reach, or a video that doesn’t say it’s a server
RememberThey can read and remember the addressAn IP with a port, a long name, or an address shown for half a second
JoinThey add the server and connectWrong version, a confusing resource-pack prompt, a long queue
StartThey know what to do in the first minuteA big spawn with no clear next step
StayThey have a reason to come back tomorrowNo goals, no friends online, no updates

Promotion only fixes the first row. If you’re getting views and Discord joins but your player count doesn’t move, the problem is further down.

Get seen: lists for searchers, Shorts for everyone else

Server lists reach players who are already shopping for a server; promoting a Minecraft server covers how to rank on them. Short videos reach players who aren’t, which is most of them. A Short has to make sense to someone who has never heard of you: show the feature, say what it is, show the address.

The strongest server Shorts show one specific thing rather than a tour. “This mine refills forever” with mining laps and a money counter beats a flyover of spawn. Find yours on the game-mode pages.

Make the address impossible to miss

Viewers have to type your address by hand, often from memory after the video ends. Treat the address like a phone number on a billboard.

  • Use a domain, not an IP and port: play.yourserver.com, or just yourserver.com.
  • Show it on screen for at least the last three to four seconds, large and inside the safe zone the app buttons don’t cover. See the IP badge guide.
  • Put it in the first line of every caption and in your profile bio.
  • For new players, a how-to-join walkthrough shows exactly where to type it: Multiplayer, Add Server, the address, Join.
  • If you accept Bedrock players, show the Bedrock port under the address.

Remove friction at the join

  • Say which versions you support in your listing and Discord, and accept as many as your plugins allow.
  • If you use a resource pack, explain in one line why players should accept it.
  • Keep the login and lobby steps short. Every extra screen loses people.

Give them a reason to stay

Retention is its own topic, but the parts that matter for promotion are simple: a first goal reachable in a few minutes (a rank-up, a first generator, a first island upgrade), something social (a starter channel, a team or gang), and visible progress. The good news is that those moments are also your best video material, so a server that retains well is easier to promote.

Track which videos bring players

Give each platform its own address that points to the same server (tiktok.yourserver.com, yt.yourserver.com). The Minecraft client sends the hostname the player typed, so join-analytics plugins can count new players per address. Then you can compare formats: did the skit bring more players than the feature showcase?

VoxelCut’s Brand Kit holds those per-platform addresses and ends each export on the right one, and it can make several hook variations of the same video so you can test which opening brings more joins.

Make the videos without a video team

The bottleneck for most servers is output: a few good Shorts a week, every week. VoxelCut writes, voices, films and edits them from a prompt on your own PC, joining your server in a real Minecraft client and ending each video on your address.

Frequently asked questions

Why do I get views but no new players?

Usually the address isn’t shown long enough or clearly enough, the video doesn’t make clear it’s a server you can join, or new players leave in the first minutes. Show the address for the last few seconds, put it in the caption’s first line, and check what a new player sees at spawn.

Is a domain name better than an IP for a Minecraft server?

Yes. A short domain like play.yourserver.com is easier to remember and type, hides the port, and lets you create per-platform subdomains to track where players come from.

How long does it take to grow a Minecraft server?

There is no reliable number; it depends on the game mode, competition and how consistently you post. Plan on months of steady listings and short videos rather than one viral moment.

Should I buy players or votes?

No. Server lists remove servers for fake players and votes, and real players leave when the numbers don’t match what they see in game.
