What has to be on frame 0
- A moving subject. A character running at the camera or facing it; the thing you’re about to talk about.
- The first caption word. Visible on the very first frame, because most viewers start with the sound off.
- No intro. No logo, no fade from black, no “hey guys”.
- The proof by about one second. If the hook says “this hole fills itself”, it fills on screen inside the first second.
TikTok’s own guidance is to introduce the video’s proposition in the first three seconds (TikTok). The Minecraft showcases we measured do it in under two: their hooks run 1.1–1.9 seconds.
Five hook shapes
| Shape | Example | Why it works |
|---|---|---|
| Negative command | “Do not crack the pumpkins this Halloween.” | Creates a question the video answers |
| Absurd claim | “This mod gives you a nose.” | Too strange to swipe past, then proven |
| Outcome first | “I went from $0 to $1B in one hour.” | Shows the payoff before the process |
| Number story | A server list stuck at 0 players… then 370 | A change anyone can read |
| Conflict | “My teammate went offline. Big mistake.” | A story with stakes, for skits |
The first two come from narrated Minecraft mod showcases with four to seven words each; the rest from server promos and skits. In OpusClip’s 2026 study of high-performing short videos, hooks that show the product or outcome ranked highest (OpusClip), which for a server means showing the payoff first.
Write one in five minutes
Pick the one feature
The video is about one thing. Name it: the mortar cannon, the money-per-hour, the heart count.
Find the most extreme fact
The biggest number, the strangest effect, the fastest result.
Turn it into four to seven words
As a command (“Do not…”), a claim (“This server gives you…”), or an outcome (“I went from…”).
Colour the key word
Make one or two hook words red in the captions, and nothing else for the rest of the video.
Plan the proving shot
The first shot shows the claim happening. If you can’t show it in a second, pick another hook.
What comes after the hook
The mod showcases we measured follow a feature ladder: what it is or how to get it, three to five features each bigger than the last (“First…”, “But that’s not all.”, “Even…”), then the most extreme use or a question to the viewer. Ending on a question invites comments, and ending within half a second of the last word makes the Short loop back into the hook.
Test hooks against each other
The cheapest experiment in short video is the same video with two openings. VoxelCut can make hook variations of one edit, reusing the footage and voice. Post them a few days apart and compare how many viewers stayed past the first seconds, and how many joined from each.
“Make 3 hook variations of this video: a negative command, an outcome first, and a question.”
Frequently asked questions
How long should a hook be in a Minecraft Short?
Four to seven words, said in under two seconds, with the subject on screen from the first frame.
What is a good hook for a Minecraft server video?
One that shows the payoff first: “Do not mine with a pickaxe on this server” over a cannon clearing the mine, or “I went from $0 to $1B” over the counter.
Should the hook mention the server name?
Usually not. Lead with the feature or the story; the name and address belong at the end, where viewers who stayed are ready to join.
